Because there are so many different diamonds, it’s essential to have a universal grading system to compare and evaluate them. The Gemological Institute of America developed the 4C’s and the GIA International Diamond Grading System. Listed below are the 4C’s (Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carat). |
|
Diamonds are valued by how closely they reach colorlessness, the less color a diamond has the higher the value (excludes fancy-colored diamonds). Most diamonds are graded from colorless to near-colorless with yellow to brown hints. The Gemological Institute of America’s color grade scales runs from the letter D (representing colorless) -Z (near colorless). Each letter represents a different degree of color. Each diamond is then compared to a master set of known diamond colors. |

Cut refers to a diamonds proportions, symmetry and polish. A round brilliant diamond traditionally has 58 facets (could have 57). Each diamond has five parts: the table (the large flat facet on the top of the stone) the crown (the facets on the top of the stone), girdle (the facets around the stone), culet (the facet on the bottom of the stone & the pavilion (the distance from the bottom of the girdle to the culet). If the pavilions depths is too shallow or too deep it will allow light to escape from either the sides or the bottom of the stone. A well cut stone will allow light to escape out of the crown. Each stone is graded on how well the facets are cut. The cut of a diamond has three major attributes: brilliance (the total light reflected from a diamond), fire (the dispersion of light into the colors of the spectrum), & scintillation (the flashes of light when the diamond is moved). Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, & Poor.

Every diamond is formed deep within the earth under extreme pressure and heat. Because of this they are often found with internal inclusions or external blemishes. A diamonds clarity refers to the absences of these inclusions or blemishes. A diamond without any inclusions or blemishes are extremely rare (most jewelers have never seen a flawless diamond). Using the International Diamond Grading System, diamonds are then assigned a clarity grade that ranges from flawless (FL) to obvious inclusions (I3). Each clarity grade is based on the size, nature, position, color or relief, and quantity of clarity of characteristics visible under 10x magnification. |

Diamonds & other gemstones are weighed in metric carats. One metric carat equals 100 (one-hundred) points. This can be compared to $1.00 (one-dollar), one dollar equals 100 (one-hundred) pennies. For example a diamond that weighs .75 points is equivalent to 75 cents. But two diamonds of the same carat weight can be of different values depending on the other 4C’s, color, cut, & clarity. |
